What happens when things don’t work out like you thought they would?

So, what happens when things don’t work out like you thought they would?

It’s a reality of life. Sometimes things just don’t work out.

But it’s not the end. It’s how we get to the other side that shows what we’re made of. Here are some thoughts:

  • It’s OK to feel sorry for yourself. This is a normal reaction and shouldn’t be shut down. Give yourself a hug, have a cry if you need to. Wallow in some self-pity.

  • Draw comfort from yourself and others you trust. Take it easy on yourself. Review what’s happened, ask the questions, consider the answers, then see what you can learn.

  • Accept the reality. There comes a time when you have to face the reality. It didn’t work out like you thought it would. Yes, it sucks. But that’s just how it is.

  • Reset expectations. Have a good look around. This is what the new normal looks like. Take time to think about your next move. Consider the options you have.

  • Take steps. When you’re ready, take a step forward. Reset your bearings. Start moving again. Get in contact with people. Make some calls. Build some momentum.

  • Set the course. Once you’re moving, things start to happen. You’ll have a clearer head, you’ll start to see where you want to go. Think through a bit of a plan and move towards it.

And remember, always be kind to yourself.
