Choosing your business hours - surely it’s easy?

Can you spot the difference? This is our local coffee shop.

They only do coffee.

No biscotti, no cakes, no breakfast, no food. Just coffee. And it’s really good coffee.

But what’s the difference between the two photos?

The crowd of people. People love this place. Even though it’s just coffee.

But the owners close their shop on Mondays.

Mondays!

They want a break. Yet Monday is the day when most people REALLY need a coffee!

So, the issue is this:

  • This is not a serious business.

  • A serious business would operate 7 days a week.

  • A serious business would give customers what they want.

  • A serious business would be able to give the owners a break.

  • A serious business would operate whether the owners were there or not.

  • This is not a serious business.

It’s a lifestyle job for the owners. Now, of course, that’s OK. Everyone needs a break.

It’s their choice.

But it’s a bad business decision.

They’re not maximising their opportunities.

They’re not utilising their assets.

They’re exposing themselves to risks.

Their customers are going elsewhere to get their coffee.

They risk losing that relationship.

Yet, it highlights the plight of many small business owners. “Who’ll take care of business when I’m not there?”

That’s what systems are all about. That’s what building a business is all about.

And we’re the experts at building a business. Give me a call if you need a hand.
